Plans for wind farm near Longtown to go on show

Plans to install wind turbines on land at Hallburn Farm near Longtown are to be presented to the public next weekend at an exhibition organised by renewable energy company, Cornwall Light & Power.

The exhibition will be held at Longtown Memorial Hall Community Centre on Friday 10th (12 noon – 8pm) and Saturday 11th July (10am – 2pm).

Visitors to the two-day exhibition will have a chance to find out more about outline plans for the site, which could accommodate up to six wind turbines measuring 125 metres to the tip of the blade.

Together, the turbines could produce enough clean, emissions-free electricity to power over 6,100 households each year (based on Government figures for average household consumption).

A wind farm at Hallburn Farm would also make a substantial contribution to the current target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the North West by at least 60% by 2050, and to generate 20% of the region’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Development Manager at Cornwall Light & Power, Steve Allen, said:

“The purpose of the exhibition is to consult directly with people living near the site – to provide information on what we propose, to hear people’s views and to collect feedback which will be essential in determining the content of our planning application.

“We are committed to working in partnership with the local community to develop a renewable energy scheme that everyone can take pride in and we will endeavour to keep people updated at every stage of the development process.”

Cornwall Light & Power is also in the process of preparing a request for a Scoping Opinion, which will be submitted to Carlisle City Council in order to determine the content of the Environmental Statement which will be prepared as part of the planning process.
