Construction works have begun on the repowering of the Goonhilly Wind Farm in Cornwall.
The Goonhilly wind farm was one of the first wind farms to be built in Cornwall in 1993 and since then the site has produced approximately 150 million units of clean electricity (kWh). The current Goonhilly wind farm consists of 14 turbines which will be replaced by 6 larger turbines which will triple the current output. It will enable the Lizard Peninsula to meet 100% of its domestic electric demand from local wind power.
Excavations on the turbine foundations have begun with one turbine foundation now cast. The embedded tower sections are due to be delivered to site by the end of May and will be cast thereafter.
The 6 Vestas 2MW turbines will be delivered to site in mid July and the site should be fully operating and exporting clean, green electric to the local distribution grid by the middle of September 2010.
The old turbines will be decommissioned in 2 phases with the first batch being taken down in mid June with the remaining turbines being removed from site in early September.
