Renewable Energy Generation owns and operates 8 wind farms located across the UK with a total capacity of 26.25MW.
Our wind farm developments are all facilitated by our subsidiary company Cornwall Light & Power which is a UK based company that has been involved in owning, operating and developing wind farms for the last decade. The company was initially set up in 1993 to build and operate one of the first wind farms in the UK, which has been running successfully ever since. In June 2005, REG bought CLP as one of its first investments in the renewables market, and has been consistently developing new projects across the UK ever since.
REG is committed to the continuing development of wind powered energy across the UK and is currently investing in a repowering of the first site to be constructed by CLP in Cornwall, which will expand total capacity to over 30MW.
Wind energy is produced by converting the wind's energy through rotor blades which are connected by a shaft to a speed increasing gearbox and high-speed generator. They range in capacity from several kilowatts to five megawatts and start operating in wind speeds as low as of around three/four metres per second (around seven miles per hour).
The longer the blades, the larger the area 'swept' by the rotor and the greater the energy output, so computers monitor and control every aspect of turbine operation to maximise wind capture. Larger machines also create increasing capital and operational efficiencies and, as they are modular, they can quickly be added to an existing site to increase overall system reliability and performance.
